Obituary

Mrs. Verleen Danzy Matheney, 85, of Crossett, Arkansas passed away peacefully at home on August 18, 2022. She was born and raised in Parkdale, Arkansas on February 18, 1937, the 6th of 17 children. She graduated from Savage High School and later married Roy Eason Matheney, Sr. and moved to Crossett, AR. in 1955. Mrs. Matheney immersed herself in family life, the church, and community. She was a devoted wife of 55 years, a mother, licensed missionary, and former District Missionary of the Eldorado District. She was a leader and visionary, who sought to elevate and recognize the first ladies of the district and state through educational programs and celebrations of life. As a pastor's wife she served as first lady of six church congregations. Ogden COGIC (Ogden, AR), King David Temple (Davis Memorial, Crossett), Lewis Temple (Texarkana), Fairview (Eldorado), Powerhouse (Warren), and Community COGIC (Eldorado). She served the community in numerous capacities, but most notably as the first site Director of the Southeast Area Agency on Aging. She opened their first location at King David Temple, 108 North Tennessee in 1975, as the congregation moved to its present site at 3rd and Virginia. She served in that capacity ten years, as the site moved to the location at 3rd and Martin Luther King Drive.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years the late Bishop Roy E. Matheney Sr., one son Superintendent Roy Eason Matheney Jr., her parents Ellis and Ileen Thomas-Danzy, four brothers, Leroy, Robert, Steven, and Eddie. Four sisters, Nancy Williams, Earnestine Gales, Emma Burdette, and Ola Mae Moorer.
She leaves to cherish her memories five sons, Dr. Robert Matheney (Beverly) of New Orleans, LA., Superintendent Ronald Matheney (Helen) of Camden, AR., Elder Ricky Matheney (Lisa), and Mr. Ralph Matheney all of Crossett, Elder Rodney Matheney of Conway, AR., one daughter Dr. Roselyn St Etienne (David) of New Orleans, LA., daughter in law, Dana Matheney Crossett, four brothers, Willie Danzy Fayetteville, AR., Ellis Danzy (Aretha) Crossett, AR., Samuel Danzy (Rowena) of Cleveland, OH., James Danzy (Shirley) Dermott, AR., four sisters, Margaret Richmond Conway, AR., Shirley Williams Little Rock, AR., Linda Page (John) Dermott, AR., Jewell Danzy Smith (Charles) of Las Vegas, NV., eighteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.
A Community Service honoring Mrs. Verleen Danzy Matheney will be on Friday, August 26, 2022, 6:00 pm at Davis Memorial COGIC in Crossett, AR. Life Celebration Service will be Saturday, August 27, 2022, 11:00 am at Revival Center COGIC 311 South Pine Street, Monticello, AR., officiated by Bishop Michael A. Jones, Prelate Arkansas 3rd Jurisdiction. Active Pallbearers Pastors & Elders of the Arkansas 3rd Jurisdiction. Honorary Pallbearers Grandchildren. Burial will follow at West View Cemetery in Crossett, Arkansas under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home.
