John Henry Carter, affectionately known as "Carter", 76 of Los Angeles, CA passed away February 18, 2016 at his residence. He was a native of Wilmot, Arkansas, born on February 15, 1940 to William and Rosie Carter. He was the eldest son of ten other siblings. When John's father passed away in 1989, John assumed the role of "caretaker" of his brother and sisters, a role which he proudly carried until his death. He was a retiree of Marymount University and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA.
John is preceded in death by his parents: William and Rosie Carter, one sister: Mary Carter and one brother: Sammy Carter. "Carter" touched the lives of many people, young and old." His zest for life and love for his family and friends were often shown through his selfless acts of generosity. He loved cooking (especially his famous dressing), playing cards, listening to the blues, and hanging with his friends. He had a quiet but powerful demeanor, always stuck to his belief and told it like it was. Conversations or interactions with John were always entertaining. Depending on how he felt at any given time, you could be speaking to "John" or "Mr. Carter." His many pearls of wisdom and short catchy phrases will keep us in stitches for years to come.
John is survived by his wife Linda B. Carter; his children Michael Carter, Corey Carter, Sr. (Kendra), and Carlos Brown; his sisters: Hazel Carter of Crossett, Arkansas, Nazeree Summers (Dassie) of Kansas City, Missouri, Bernice Hamilton (Richard) of Kansas City, Kansas, Bonnie and Delia Carter of Kansas City, Missouri, Lula Mae Washington and Vicky Carter of Wilmot, Arkansas; grandchildren Christiana, Christopher, Carlos, Christopher, Porsha, Maurice, Kaelin, Sian, Landon and Corey Jr. (CJ); his many nieces and nephews, and a host of family members and friends.
Services are 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 5, 2016 at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Dean Montgomery, officiating. Pallbearers are Daryl Carter, Kendrick Martin, Freddie Tharpe, Cedrick Carter, Ray Martin, Al Carter, and Dassie Summers. Honorary Pallbearers are Maurice Carter, Verdie Vann, Jr. Tony Brown, Carlos Brown, John Steven Carter, and Freddie Walker. Burial in Westview Cemetery.
